If you asked me a few years ago if I liked a cream cleanser, I would probably tell you that it’s better for mature skin and it’s not for me. Yeah, well, I am now at that point where it is for me. And I don’t think I have mature skin (yet).
Generally speaking, cream cleansers are not as stripping and they’re a more nourishing experience than a gel cleanser (or other formats). An oil cleanse followed by cream cleanse would essentially be the elite dry skin/mature skin combo.
And a lot of Korean skincare enthusiasts swear by a cream cleanser. And while I have gotten on board with the suncreens (heavily), I never made the transition into cream cleansers.
Buuuut I’ve finally come around to loving a cream cleanser (thanks to the Farmacy Whipped Foaming Cleanser). Here’s why.
My (Initial) Hesitation around Cream Cleansers
When it comes to facial cleansers, I am the world’s biggest fan of squeaky clean. Not like actually audibly squeaking. But I do love it when I don’t feel any amount of residue behind.
And before you cancel me, I know that it is bad to have those squeaky clean cleansers everyday because it’s stripping every last drop of oil from your skin. But the toxic part of me (and my oily skin) loves that feeling as a base for my hydrating and moisturizing products in my routine. It truly feels like I am prepping my skin fully.
And thankfully, it has not become an issue for my skin.
Some of my favorite squeaky cleansers:
Youth to the People Superfood Cleanser ($39 at Amazon)
Allies of Skin Molecular Silk Cleanser ($68 at Amazon)
Bubble Fresh Start Gel Cleanser ($15 at Amazon)
Farmacy Green Clean Whipped Cleanser: Pros
There’s definitely a lot to love with the cleanser, from the ingredients (like clay for oil control, papaya enzymes for light exfoliation, and moringa oil for antioxidants) to the experience using the product.
Super foamy formula: This is one of those products that you want to use on wet skin with wet hands. If you don’t use enough water, you don’t get the bubbles. And these bubbles are big, bursting bubbles, not a light foam. That’s very refreshing for me, as I’m used to gel cleansers which actually do not bubble up as big! And no, you don’t need the bubbles for an effective cleanse. But I do think they make for a more fun experience when you do cleanse.
Thick product: I use my facial cleansers in the shower, which is convenient from a rinsing perspective but challenging from a separating the product from the water perspective. Because the Farmacy cleanser is so thick, I actually don’t accidentally “drop it” after I dispense it into my hand. It holds its shape in the palm of my hand, instead of slipping and sliding all over. That means I won’t be losing product without actually using it.
Easy-to-use packaging: the flip top actually has a satisfying click to it and it closes easily. I’m essentially blind in the shower because my glasses prescription is so bad. So if I can find a product, open it, dispense it, close it, and put it back without too much struggle, it makes a world of a difference. The tube is gigantic, has a good weight to it (without the concern of glass in the shower, looking at you, Youth to the People), and tightly snaps shut so that it doesn’t leak product all over your shelf/shower.
Farmacy Green Clean Whipped Cleanser: Cons
Even though using this Farmacy product has been an overall pleasure, there’s definitely some key points I wish had improved.
Slightest bit of residue left behind: I’ve been harping on and on about a squeaky clean. And this gets really close to it, but it leaves the faintest amount of residue on your skin. It’s so disappointing because I had super high hopes! If you compare this to the Shiseido Clarifying Cleansing Foam (which is actually a cream cleanser, instead of a foam top dispenser), the Shiseido one edges this out just slightly. That one has the perfect squeaky clean. The Farmacy one would fall under the “maintains a layer of moisture behind” category. And that’s perfect for some people. But for my toxic self, I prefer it to leave no trace behind.
Fragranced (lime and bergamot): when I heard the fragrance description, I was super excited. I love, love, love the Necessaire Bergamot Body Wash (RIP when it got discontinued). The Farmacy Cleanser doesn’t really smell like that though. It is really faint, but it smells more like a mint than it does anything else. And I don’t know if that’s just because of the lime coming through for a level of “freshness” or if it is something else (citronellal, eugenol, linalool, etc). But if you have super sensitive skin and want to avoid any of these fragrant components, the Farmacy Gentle Cleanser would work better for you.
Confusing positioning with Green Clean Gentle Creamy Cleanser: Speaking of the Farmacy Gentle Creamy Cleanser… I will admit that I was very confused between the 2 cleansers (that have the same style of tube, just in different colors). And they’re both tubes of Green Clean. And as I’ve learned, the devil is in the details. The Gentle one is better for sensitive or dry skin; the Whipped one is better for combo or oily skin. And they have ingredients to support their respective skin types. I just wish they made that difference much more apparent when you look at the 2 products side-by-side on shelf. It also doesn’t help this was previously called Whipped Greens. Talk about an identity crisis!
A Solid Cream Cleanser Perfect for Combo Skin Types
After using roughly half of the tube so far, I can confidently say this Farmacy Cleanser changed my perspective on tubed cream cleansers. Not only does it cleanse effectively, but it also makes the process of cleansing (in the shower) very easy.
As for when I choose to use this cream cleanser over a gel cleanser: it’s really up to the vibes. I’ve found that with certain oil-based cleansers/balms, I have better success with a cream cleanser than I do with a gel cleanser. The Elemis Cleansing Balm (which notoriously leaves a lot of residue on my skin) works better with the cream cleansers than gels. But the Farmacy Green Clean Cleansing Balm emulsifies very well and leaves a more minimal residue behind, making it a great partner for gel cleanser. And it does ultimately depend on what type of SPF (here’s my favorites!) or makeup I wore that day. And I can’t confirm or deny if cleansing twice a day with this would strip your skin because I only cleanse at night.
But long story short, the Farmacy Whipped Cleanser is a great option for those with combo or oily skin who want to get a thorough cleanse without stripping their skin. You can safely use this daily without any concerns of drying your skin out. And you don’t immediately feel like you need moisturizer after cleansing.
